Two More Puzzles, Honestly Resolved: Cabin Flashes and the "Possible Laser"

First, Aldrin separately reported a phenomenon with no connection to the translunar object: "I don't know whether I saw it the first night, but I'm sure I saw it the second night. On September 29, 1969, the tabloid National Bulletin published what came to be known as the "Pepper transcript" (after its purported source), a wholly fabricated document claiming to be a secretly recorded, uncensored Apollo 11 communication. Aerospace engineer and space journalist James Oberg's exhaustive 1979–1980 investigation — which included direct interviews with NASA communications officials — identified the hoax's tells immediately: the fake transcript has the crew addressing "Mission Control" (the real callsign was always "Houston"), uses technical jargon no real Apollo transmission ever used, and describes events (such as only two astronauts being present in a scene requiring three) that contradict basic, publicly known mission facts. It was never a leak of anything; it was invented whole.
The myth gained a second life in 1975 when the tabloid Modern People ran a story by writer Otto Binder claiming ham-radio operators had intercepted an "unpublished, off-the-record conversation" in which an astronaut declared "these babies were huge, sir… and I'm telling you there are other spacecraft out there, lined up on the far side of the crater edge. They're on the Moon watching us." Outlets including Newsweek, Fortune, and numerous less rigorous websites and video channels covered the release as a revelation, in several cases (as documented above, regarding the "possible laser" language) conflating separate passages of the same document into a single, more dramatic-sounding claim.
